The GiJong Monk She notes of many meetings over a six decade period with a man she names as, "The GiJong Monk". "A master mesmerist", according to many of these entries. A number of hypnosis and devices of illusion were found in this estate that were attributed to him, at least in design. From their journals it is apparent this was a tall, handsome, well dressed, versed and spoken Chinaman that was a welcome guest and associate, known to be well received entertainment to his hostess and her guests. Although she claims, "it is not an illusion", it is alleged he amazed many with his ability to transform into a Phoenix, a tiger, a peacock, and back to a man again in the blink of an eye. She writes, "Feng is Loa to his ancient line, owing his blood an eternal debt. The is a rare amulet that is attributed as a B.E. 2517 L.P. Phrom Silver and Steel Alloy Coin Amulet. L.P. Phrom was the first abbot of Wat Chong Kae, and these pims were his last of his non-posthumous coin amulets produced there. Three small batches of 30 amulets each were produced before he redesigned his coinage.
This amulet was a limited issue batch of twenty-one minted which are currently trading at RM 268,888.88 (Malaysian Ringgit = $62, 890.66 USD)! This is one of six of the original twenty-one known to exist. Despite the scarcity of these amulets, they do not command the $10,000+ (USD) prices over these of his batch of nineteen amulets made from a temple bell! L.P. Phrom was a proliferous amulet maker, known to produce miraculous amulets as fund raisers for temple expansion and renovation. He would personally bless these batches of amulets on eleven auspicious days and nights for eleven hour sessions! Such was his way of magic, and his amulets are well known to be strongly blessed. They are still very popular in Thailand today. They are attributed with protecting the worshiper from harm, accident, weapon and obstacle while granting wealth, luck, good business and progression. His amulets have gained quite a reputation for protection from black magic and evil spirits while offering life protection. Many claim to have been given wealth and triumph, loving kindness, prevention from harm and change of one's bad luck to good. These are beautiful minted amulets which were made by this well known Buddhist monk to bring luck, happiness, wealth, protection etc.
According to one of her journal entries, “They offer multiple levels of protection."
Examination of the amulet reveals its characteristic shape, dimensions and weight. It is not uncirculated and we have lowered the market value price of this one in accordance.
It measures approximately 1 7/16" (with bale) x 15/16" x 3/16", and weighs 12.1 grams.
Examination by three self proclaimed experts resulted in agreement that this is an authentic B.E. 2517 (1974) LP Phrom Rian Songnam (Stainless Steel Mixture Silver) Amulet attributed to L.P. Phrom as the title implies. We questioned the ability of silver to alloy with stainless steel and apparently it can and has been done, usually in connection with magic, and or weaponry. ~!~ A Thai worshiper, collector and friend, tells us in his own words, "The Reverend Father Phrom, I visit at Chong Khae Temple and see the holy monk as alive and deceased person. The body does not rot and smells sweet, this is not anointed, but seep from the flesh, very beautiful and miraculous thing. His the hair, nails, beard grows long still. These rian are the final version coins with three meats (metals) namely old bells, stainless steel, copper with the image of Holy Father on the front to meditate fully. The back has a ten talisman with ten Khmer characters. His amulets makes you rich and lucky. Help you be popular with charm. Avoid Danger." ~!~
These amulets were made to raise funds for a temple. They are sought by collectors and worshipers alike and quickly sell out, and just as quickly appear on the secondary market at premium prices shortly thereafter. The cost of the amulets in the cigar box to the GiJong Monk was $11 USD! ~!~ Translated from the,"Complete Book Which Assemble The Biography With Auspicious Objects Of Luang Phaw Phrom Wat Chong Kae 1. A Man Survived from Gun! One disciple chosen to be a soldier came to pay respect to LP Phrom. LP Phrom gave him a cloth which LP Phrom wrote Yant (holy characters) on by himself. After that, a disciple went to work as a soldier and one day he was shot but he survived because he carried a cloth from LP Phrom. 2. Holy Words! After story of cloth from LP Phrom spread, pieces of cloth were wanted by a lot of people. A monk in Wat Chongkhae copied cloth from LP Phrom by writing Yant by himself. He put cloth on sale. When LP Phrom knew that, he blamed that monk. “Why did you do it? Are you crazy?” LP Phrom said to that monk. In fact, people believed what LP Phrom said would come true. Soon, that monk went crazy like LP Phrom said. 3. A Man Survived from Electric Shock! A man wearing LP Phrom medal rode a motorcycle in the heavy rain. Accidentally, he hit the electrical wires from the old pole. High electricity went through his body and he passed out immediately. He was admitted to the hospital. The Mala Necklace
The Ensemble Components and Commentary
Her journaled inventory tells us this is; "a Che-qu skull, silver and 1962 Brazil amethyst, single amulet necklace", custom made for the LiDiex by herself and three of her practitioner staff during a ceremony of prayer bead making in 1979. Examination reveals a Bali Sterling Silver, Che-qu Skull and Brazilian Shaman's Amethyst Amulet Necklace, as the title implies. ~!~ The Sterling Silver More often than not, their metal of choice was silver as she notes, "Silver is the mirror of the soul related to the moon energies. It strengthens connections of the astral and physical bodies. A metal unmatched in its psychic energies and healing abilities, I have used it as a spell medium, to heal the speech impaired and to help public speakers achieve eloquence. Induced into the drink, it has expelled the toxins that caused headaches, arthritis, intestinal and blood disorders. More importantly it attracts, enhances and stores energies of gemstones, driving out negative energies the stone may have absorbed." ~!~ Los Angeles Indonesian Sterling Silver Her journals and inventory tells us the rings, cones, hooks and twenty-four assorted beads and spacers used in this mala necklace, were part of a large quantity of silver attributed as being purchased from an unnamed, Indonesian/American, practitioner, follower, of Los Angeles from 1970 through 1977. A Los Angeles Indonesian, craftswoman with four silversmiths in her employ, she also had family connections in Indonesia who acted as her buyers. Unmarked, all test as .925 Sterling Silver Standard. ~!~ Che Qu Skulls
Her journaled also inventory also tells us the ten white skull beads used in this necklace are, “Che-Qu", and are part of a large lot of antique beads she traded for in the Namche Bazaar in 1958.
"The monk traded a duffel bag of goods for a .303 Lee Enfield rifle and fifty rounds of ammunition”, according to that entry. The rifle would be worth between $150 to $500 today, depending on the model and condition.“Che-Qu", she tells us are fossilized giant clam shells found in the mountainous regions of Tibet and Nepal. It is alleged that they have been carved by regional holy men.
~!~ She refers to these as, "Giant Clam Power Beads that ease stress and bring clarity", and, makes a number of journal entries concerning them, some of which read; “this is an advanced holy material to the Tibetan Buddhist. Scientifically, these fossilized giant clam fossils have been shown to generate strong magnetic fields that folklore tells us will protect one from evil spirits.” “They are used by Tibetan healers in treating blood circulatory problems, stress management, depression, headaches, insomnia and recuperation from illness and wounds.” Analysis of this material shows it is composed mostly of calcium carbonate and shell keratin's, in addition to a dozen different amino acids and numerous trace elements. ~!~ Brazilian Shaman's Amethyst
Her journals and inventory go on to tell us the seventy-four, 6.35 mm round amethyst beads used in this amulet mala necklace were cut for her in Mexico, by an unnamed practitioner, follower, lapidary, in 1963, from amethyst specimen obtained during her 1962 Brazilian Shaman artifact hunt.
Although she does not name them in her notes she solicited a handful of Brazilian holy men, healers, sorcerers and seers to act as guides to her party, and relinquish some of their precious finds usually in trade for guns.
She does write of this particular sourced batch of amethyst as having a wide range of metaphysical healing properties. She also writes, "the most powerful of the amethyst sources we have found. When excavating the stones and breaking them open I felt contentment as never before. The jewelry and items I have made these into have benefited my own meditations and their shielding powers have proven effective in warding off negative energies while attracting and amplifying positive ones. They have been very effective in healing my clients suffering with sadness and grief."
The beads are of fine grind and polish with evenly matched medium violet color with varying amounts of transparency and eye visible inclusions.

All of these have been hand knotted, and strung together with black yak sinew to form this amulet mala necklace measuring approximately 28" in overall length. She writes of the acquisition of a large quantity of this sinew from a, "Chinese healer and talisman maker known for and sought for his works", purchased at the Namche Bazaar of Nepal in 1928.
